1. General French Tests

Test d’Evaluation du Français (TEF)

The TEF is an internationally recognised way of evaluating your skills in French and used by employers, universities and business schools in France, such as INSEAD. It establishes and provides for a certificate that reports the applicant’s level. It is valid for two years.

The TEF consists of 4 compulsory sections and 1 optional sections:

Test Duration
4 compulsory sections:
Reading 60 min
Vocabulary & structures 30 min
Listening 40 min
Writing (expression écrite) 60 min
1 optional sections:
Speaking (expression orale) 15 min

* we do not take responsibility for and cannot advice on the right sections of the test to take as it depends on every individual situation. Please make sure you check which sections you need.

Test d’Evaluation de Français adapté au Québec (TEFaQ)

TEFaQ, which is an adaptation of the regular TEF, is required by the Ministry of Immigration Québec for a visa application. A certificate of results is issued and valid for two years.
The test is NOT suitable for candidates with only a basic knowledge of the language and candidates should not register without having attained an upper intermediate level of French. Candidates now need to have at least a B2 level. Both the listening & speaking sections are compulsory for the TEFaQ.

Candidates for TEFaQ can select which part of the test they want to sign for:

Test
Duration

Listening (compréhension orale)

40 min

Reading (compréhension écrite)

Writing (expression écrite)

Speaking (expression orale)

The TEF Canada is now the only test recognised by Citizenship and Immigration Canada (CIC) as proof of French language proficiency for people wishing to immigrate to Canada or to get Canadian Citizenship. A good knowledge of the language is now necessary as the level required has been increased. Level B2 of the Common European Framework for Languages has become the minimum threshold from which points are attributed for knowledge of oral and written French (two points can be attributed for knowledge of writing/reading).

** Candidates for immigration to Canada must take the 4 sections of the test. Candidates for Canadian Citizenship need take the listening and speaking sections only.
